At Coalway Junior School the intention is that children gain a firm understanding of what music is through listening, singing, playing, evaluating, analysing and composing across a wide variety of historical periods, styles, traditions and musical genres. Our objective at Coalway Junior School is to develop a curiosity for the subject, as well as an understanding and acceptance of the validity and importance of all types of music, and an unbiased respect for the role that music may wish to be expressed in any person’s life. We are committed to ensuring children understand the value and importance of music in the wider community, and are able to use their musical skills, knowledge, and experiences to involve themselves in music, in a variety of different contexts. A growing awareness of musical appreciation is developed by using the children’s performances, and through listening to an accompanying visiting musicians and a wide variety of record music of different styles. Music is always a key part of our whole school assemblies and productions, and the children all enjoy taking part in performances for their parents throughout the year.
Children at Coalway are taught one hour of music each week. We use the resource ‘Charanga’ to ensure our pupils have quality teaching whilst covering all aspects of the National Curriculum. Children in Years 3-5 are taught to play the recorder as a whole class and children in Year 6 are taught to play the ukulele. As a school we have a good variety of untuned percussion instruments for the children to use as well enough chime bars for a whole class to use at one time.
Young Voices
At Coalway we give our children in upper school the opportunity to take part in the Young Voices Concert at Birmingham Resorts Arena annually. The children sing alongside 6,000 other children directed by world class performers and producers. This is a once in a lifetime experience. Mrs Price and Mrs Lusted are attending the Teacher Workshop in Bristol in October so that they can learn all the songs and dance moves to take back to school and relay to the children.
